Compact 50/34 Crankset for Cyclocross?

cyclocross riderCompact 50/34 cranksets are widely available these days and make sense if you’re looking to do a combination of road and off-road riding. Many people who use their cross bikes for both road and off-road riding use a standard 48/36 or 46/38 cyclocross crankset. This would probably work fine in most cases, however, the top gearing might be a tad low if you spend a lot of time on the road.

Another way to go is to use a 50/34 compact crankset with two separate wheelsets and two cassettes. This can be a good solution for road riders who just want to go play around in the mud a couple of Saturdays a year. The 50-34 crankset, paired with a 12-25 or 12-27 cassette gives you lots low gearing for off-road situations, while giving you the versatility to tackle almost any road ride with a simple wheelset switch. Keep an 11-23 cassette on your road wheels and you’ll bee able to keep plenty of speed on descents and flats.

Serious crossers may want to go with a 46 or 48 tooth big ring for racing, but most casual cyclocross participants would be just fine with the 50 tooth big ring available on most road compact cranksets.
