cadence compact crankRaceFace is a brand mostly associated with Mountain Biking. The Cadence compact crankset it the first road crankset for the component maker. Although the MSRP for this product is $240, you can find the crankset online for around $100. This makes it a good replacement crank for entry level to intermediate riders on a budget.

There’s nothing special aesthetically about the Cadence. A standard black matte finish with white graphics give the crankset a clean, understated look. Material choice is also fairly run-of-the-mill. Forged 6066 alloy crankarms with machined 7075 chainrings make this compact crankset strong, but not overly lightweight. RaceFace uses what it calls “I-Beam” profiling on the cadence for enhanced stiffness and strength.

The bottom bracket of the Cadence is a proprietary system that RaceFace calls X-Type. The X-Type bb cups are compatible with both Shimano and FSA external bb systems if you every want to keep the bb and ditch the crank.

Rather than the 50/34 chainrings on most compact double cranksets, RaceFace went with a 50/36 which gives riders a little more gear in the small ring. The RaceFace Cadence may not be the crankset to hang on your high end carbon road bike, but it would certainly make a good replacement crank for budget riders looking to give compact gearing a try.
