The Shimano Dura Ace FC-7950 compact crankset is the top of the line compact crankset from Shimano. If you’re a competitive racer or if you’re just a rider with cash to spend and an appreciation for the best in cycling technology, this is the compact crankset for you.
The Dura Ace 7950 gives you unparalleled stiffness for maximum power transfer. The weight is extremely light, and shifting is crisp and silent. Hollow crank arms as well as a hollow outer chainring that makes use of HollowGlide technology, enables a weight savings that brings the crankset to 625g and a claimed 20% increase in overall stiffness. All of this and the Dura Ace 7950 compact crankset is the best looking Dura Ace crankset to date. A sharp-edged, sculpted look with clean lines down the crank-arms, combined with a dark gray finish give this crankset style that screams “pro”.

50/34 rings let you tackle almost any climb no matter what your fitness level. Even when you crossing chain with a 34-11 combo, you’ll be rewarded with drivetrain noise that’s almost non-existent. Racers won’t have to worry about power lost to crankset flex. Every watt of power is maximized with this super-stiff crankset. The FC-7950 also features a newly redesigned bottom bracket seal system that is said to reduce the possibility of contamination and minimize friction.
When paired with then new Dura Ace 11-28 cassette, you’ll get a massive gear range that will have you flying up even the steepest climbs. Although not as light as SRAM Red or Campy Record, the Shimano Dura Ace FC-7950 compact crankset should be on the list of any rider looking for front-end shifting quality and high power transfer. The FC-7950 is available in 170mm, 172.5mm or 175mm crankarm lengths.
Nashbar is featuring a great deal right now on the Shimano Dura Ace 7950 compact crankset. This crankset retails for around $700 and they’ve got it priced at $447.99. Pretty good price, the only issue is that it looks they’ve got limited sizes as is the usual case at Nashbar. The 175mm lengths is the only one listed as “in stock.”
Love this crankset. Super-light, super-stiff, looks fantastic. I’ve tested a few bikes recently with SRAM Red. It’s nice, but the shifts don’t seem as clean or reliable as DA and it doesn’t feel as stiff to me. Going to a compact has been nice for the kind of climbing I do. Descending can be a little annoying though. I tend to spin out even running 50/11. If I had the luxury of two bikes, I’d set up one with a compact double for longer rides and climbing and a second with a standard double for short, fast club rides.
Love my Shimano compact! The shifting is clean and reliable. Highly recommended
