Shimano FC-R600 Compact CranksetThe Shimano FC-R600 is a non-series compact crankset with performance and price that put it on par with 105 series components. Unlike Shimano 105 or Ultegra, the FC-R600 doesn’t utilize Hollowtech II technology, so the crank arms are solid rather than hollow. This gives the crankset a bulkier look and a heavier weight than it’s hollow-armed brethren. Coming in at 843 grams without the bottom bracket, the R600 is respectably light and most recreational riders won’t notice the weight difference. The 50/34 chainrings, when paired with almost any cassette, gives riders the climbing ability of a triple, without the need for a 30 tooth granny ring.

Like all of their cranksets, Shimano has engineered specially shaped teeth and pick-up pins that ensure reliable, accurate shifting day-in and day-out. Most new riders, who have a tendency to put more strain on a drivetrain by trying to shift when they shouldn’t, will be much better served by precise shifts than they would be by an ultra-light compact crankset. The Shimano FC-R600 compact crankset is perfect for beginner to intermediate riders looking for a crankset that delivers spot-on shifts and won’t break the bank.

This crankset came stock on my Specialized Secteur Elite. This is my first real road bike so I don’t have much to compare it to, but it seems to be very well made. I haven’t had any problems with shifting. Had the bike tuned once in the past six months and it’s been running like a dream. I love the compact gearing. I feel confident going out and hitting some of the biggest hills in my area, even when I’m out of shape.

I have this crankset on a Merida 904 Scultura. I have it in combination with Shimano 105 Groupo. It shifts beautifully. the compact ratios suits my riding well. It has developed a creak whilst under labor, but doesn’t seem to effect it’s performance.

I have this crankset combined with 105 on my Giant Defy Alliance and it moves up hills easier and faster than any of my mates Ultegra or SRAM kits do.
