The Shimano FC-R700 Compact Crankset is an Ultegra level crank that will work with both standard and compact style front derailleurs. The 50/34 gearing insures that there will be very few riding situations you can’t handle. Stiffness and weight is not on par with cranksets like Dura Ace and SRAM Red, but the R700 is well suited to general riding and pairs well with your existing Shimano components. Put the watts to this crankset and you’ll notice great power transfer propelling you down the road. Like most Shimano cranks, shifts are very silent and instantaneous.

You will probably be able to find lighter compact cranksets if you look into carbon, but you’re not going to match the reliability of the FC-R700. Consistent, accurate shifting is very important if you tend to do longer rides on varied terrain or races. A lighter crankset might be nice on some long climbs, but a dropped chain in the middle of a race can be catastrophic. Shimano says that these are 10-speed specific, but take this crankset to any good mechanic and they should be able to set you up quite well with your existing 9-speed drivetrain.
I’ve been riding this crankset for about six months and have been pleased overall. It replaced a worn out DA double and seems to spin just as smooth. Probably a bit heavier, but not massively. I’m running it with an Ultegra 12-25 cassette and have been able to easily kill most climbs. The r700 looks a little generic. I personally like the look of Ultegra better, but I got a great deal this crankset so I can’t complain.
Awesome crankset. Not sure how it compares to Ultegra weight wise, but I don’t notice much difference in terms of stiffness. Not sure that I’m crazy about compact gearing though. I didn’t like the sometimes jerky shifts of my old triple, but I still feel like I’m missing some gear ratios with the 50/34. I’m thinking about swapping the 12-25 cassette for an 11-23. Anyone running an 11-23 with a 50/34 compact?
I know shimano says this is an ultegra level crankset, but it doesn’t seem as stiff. Could be a difference in the bbs of the bikes I tested though. I’m getting back into road riding after a few years and can’t get used to the look of the massive bottom brackets and head tubes of today’s carbon road bikes. Anyway, this is a very solid crankset. Shifts well, looks good and is relatively cheap compared with Campy stuff.
